At the heart of Nakawuka in Wakiso District, 18 year old Jamilu is redefining what it means to persevere. Living with his single mother and three siblings, including one who also requires specialized care, Jamilu’s daily life has been shaped by significant physical and cognitive hurdles. Born with a learning disability and later losing the full use of his limbs to a childhood illness, walking became a near impossible task.

I first met Jamilu and his mother in 2023. Recognizing his strength and the family’s dedication, I committed to supporting them in their journey toward a more dignified life.

A Path to Mobility and Enterprise

In 2024, I provided Jamilu with a wheelchair to ease his daily movements. During a follow-up visit on February 26, 2026, I caught up with him at his workplace. While his wheelchair remains a vital asset at home, Jamilu’s determination to get to work quickly sometimes sees him using creative alternatives to navigate the local terrain.

Jamilu is not just a recipient of support; he is a skilled artisan. He currently rents a shared space where he operates a shoe repair business. His hands, unaffected by the illness that took his mobility, work with precision to give new life to worn footwear.

Looking Toward the Future

Jamilu has a clear vision for growth. He aims to expand his small workshop by introducing a retail component, specifically selling crocs and other durable footwear. This expansion would provide his family with a more stable income and further cement his role as a productive member of the Nakawuka community.

To support the family during this season, I was honored to gift Jamilu and his mother Ramadan food essentials. His joy upon seeing us was a powerful reminder of why community support matters.
